This is such a fascinating story, so it's too bad that Australian Stephen Dando-Collins writes in a this happened and then that happened and, oh, there was this guy and here's something about him style. It has two fascinating figures, one well-known and one obscure: crazy rich guy Cornelius Vanderbilt and brilliant, eccentric William Walker who went down to Nicaragua and, improbably, became president. It's got great themes like ego, empire, and American power, but the bland writing and superficial treatment prevent it from being the compelling read it should. There is a deeply weird movie about Walker by Alex Cox.
