"In 1939, tiny Finland waged war-the kind of war that spawns legends-against the mighty Soviet Union, and yet their epic struggle has been largely ignored. Guerrillas on skis, heroic single-handed attacks on tanks, unfathomable endurance, and the charismatic leadership of one of this century's true military geniuses-these are the elements of both the Finnish victory and a gripping tale of war."-- Provided by publisher.

Finland may have defended Europe against Soviet Russian barbarism but it made a deal with the Nazi devi/barbarianl to do so. Ironically it was the Russian barbarian that rescued Western Europe from the Nazi barbarian - at the cost of Eastern and Central Europen freedom and civilization - a price that is still being paid in these post Cold War days. Western Allies finished off the worn-down but still formidable fascist forces in the West and Southern Europe but only because the USSR had bled them nearly dry on the Eastern/Russian front - a success that would not have been possible without Western material. How strange that the Western Allies and the USSR were able to fight so successfully against a common enemy but couldn't arrive at a better peace between themselves.

Very good description of the causes and results of this little known war. Excellent battle descriptions and explainations.

This war was an important factor for the survival of the Soviet Union during its war with Germany. While it was too late to make the changes identified, at least Stalin started to realized he core problems.
