The International Thriller that Stockholm City hailed as the Best Crime Novel of the Year has finally crossed the Atlantic!

Three years ago, Lydia and Alena were two hopeful girls from Lithuania. Now they are sex slaves, lured to Sweden with the promise of better jobs and then trapped in a Stockholm brothel, forced to repay their "debt." Suddenly they are given an unexpected chance at freedom, and with it the opportunity to take revenge on their enslavers and reclaim the lives and dignity they once had. What will happen now that the tables are turned and the victims fight back?

In this masterful thriller, the celebrated team of Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström delve into the seedy underbelly of Stockholm. There we meet Lydia and Alena as they embark on a desperate plan to expose their captor and demand justice; police officers Sundkvist and Grens, on the trail of both Lydia's enslavers and Jochum Lang, a notorious mob enforcer; and Hilding Oldéus, a junkie on what might be his last—and most destructive—bender. At the Söder Hospital, their destinies begin to converge in unexpected and explosive ways.

Box 21 is a Scandinavian thriller of the highest order: a mindblowing psychological drama written with powerful intensity. When it was published in Sweden, Solo called it "suspenseful, gripping, and intelligently written . . . Almost impossible to put down," while SVT exclaimed: "Forget crime literature; this is, simply put, great literature!"

I have liked other books by these authors, but not this one. Disappointing ending, with a twist I saw coming. I found the lengths characters go to protect a colleague's reputation, and then the reputation of another colleague who has tried to protect the first colleague -- all while innocent young women continue to suffer as a result -- aggravating. Equally irritating are decisions made by the police, like providing no protection for a key witness to a crime perpetrated by someone known for frightening off witnesses. Or allowing a violent lowlife and trafficker to plead diplomatic immunity having committed a serious assault and leave the country, without barring him from reentering the country.
Perhaps the point of all this is that cover-ups can just cause worse damage to occur, and that immoral decisions made with good intentions still amount to corruption.
There's a faint hint that the trafficker left untouched and unsuspected at the end may be exposed eventually -- I'll cling to that hope.

The subject matter was unpleasant but overall the book was good. Unexpected ending. I'm going to read more books by this author. I gave it a 4 rating, not a 3.

Many books in a library are listed as non-fiction when, in point of fact, they are indeed fictional. Others are classified as fiction, when they are thinly veiled books of truth. This is one of those, a brutal, yet thoroughly well written book more factual than fiction. (I would differentiate this novel from Stieg Larsson's because Stieg wrote fiction, ultimately portraying the State as the exemplar of justice, just containing some rogue elements, while reality is quite the opposite and this novel fictionalizes reality, but the stark reality most certainly comes through!)

Awesome ! A horrible subject, but a fabulously written story. The ending is totally unexpected. I love these guys, and can't wait for them to write more books. Sadly I have already read everything they've written to date.
