A group of tense, shifty adolescents prowl the streets and subways of Paris, learning through carefully delineated sequences that they're already well underway with a bombing plot. And then it becomes something familiar, yet altogether different, as these subversives tuck away inside a shopping mall and lose themselves in consumer culture.

The film was an enjoyable action thriller staged in the streets around four sites (Paris Metro, Hotel Regina, Paris’s HSBC bank, Place des Pyramides, and Prefecture des Yvelines) for the first 50 minutes. The rest of the 130 minutes (fast watched in most parts) was a slow moving study on how the diverse terrorist cell of young members dealt with boredom and their affinities towards capitalistic goods while hiding out in a locked down shipping mall (Grand Magasin de la Samaritaine) during a manhunt. Engaging theme overall but its second half catered to a narrower set of audience, e.g. full length lip sync of Shirley Bassey’s version of “My Way” and dancing to Blondie’s “Call Me” in its entirety.

A pleasant surprise came from the 23 minutes film "Sarah Winchester, Phantom Opera 2016," also directed by Bertrand Bonello in Bonus features. Having watched Helen Mirren's supernatural "Winchester 2018," this short opera with Marie-Agnès Gillot as La danseuse, was a succinct summary of known facts about Sarah, her family, the Winchester fortune and the house, a visual/audio delight as well. A slowly moving story of seemingly normal young people blowing up part of a building and killing the security guards. There is no reason behind it but unemployment and boredom?

Saw this movie at TIFF in 2016 and left the theatre speechless. Brings the term 'art house' to a whole new level. It is a polarizing film due to the subject matter.
If you are looking for a completely left field kind of film, give this a watch!

Essay by film scholar Dennis Lim (part of the DVD insert):

A supremely cool-headed treatment of a highly combustible subject, Bertrand Bonello’s Nocturama is a tour de force of paradox: a film that seems in some ways ripped from the headlines and in others stubbornly detached from the contemporary moment. Its audacity is inseparable from its insistence on abstraction, its willingness to turn what is commonly deemed “unthinkable” into an open-ended thought experiment.

Quotes from the 23 minutes film "Sarah Winchester, Phantom Opera 2016" in bonus:
===
1861 – 1965 – The Civil War

The Civil War will claim 617,000 lives, for the most part, killed by a Winchester.

The weapons are imprecise leaving soldiers in atrocious suffering. Bodies dragging themselves along the ground, screams, dismembered limbs …

The weapon changes the face of the war, from single gunshots to widespread massacres.

Sarah will never be the same. Between anger and resignation, she doesn’t accept mourning. She thinks she killed her child through her inability to make her live. Then she thinks her child could come back if she only steps on white stones… If she only uses her left hand… If she only employs words with an odd number of letters… She thinks she can bring her back. But Annie doesn’t come back, and that plunges Sarah into an infinite, helpless… sorrow…
