A peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns, the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. The tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge must navigate the town's dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices.

I don't particularly like Matt Damon, but I did enjoy this movie.

A very good Cohen brothers movie. It starts out like Pleasentville but quickly turns into a Fargo type movie.
Loved it😤

Great 1950s nostalgia, but bad movie!

I liked it, ...entertaining, good message, good acting.
Written by the Coen brothers so of course it's quirky.

Some very great actors in this film, who really shine. The storyline is excellent, and half of it is really true, which is enlightening (no pun intended). What is so surprising is George Clooney directing, and very well done. I hope to see more of his directing skill, he is very good. This is a film that tells what the U.S. is about at a very privileged time. Make sure to watch the bonus.

Very dark take on American suburbia. Not what you what expect from the normally sunny liberal triumphalism of George Clooney. The Coen Bros. had a lot to do with it no doubt. Behind the white picket fence and the perfect lawns are murder, mayhem and the Dixie battle flag.

Yeah, I liked the colors but I really didn't care for the movie. I found it slow in the beginning and overall did not find this movie entertaining.

A look at racism in the 1950's. In a new, ideal suburb, a black family moves in, next door to Gardner's family. The community is up in arms that a black family could move into their suburb. While the community holds meeting, and protests, and taunting slurs and slinging abuse at the black family, next door is Gardner and his family who are busy trying to deal with debt collectors. It is confusing at first as to which twin is Gardner's wife. Slowly, you begin to realize that Gardner is in debt to the mob and has been trying to claim insurance money on his wife's life (an automobile accident which left her in a wheelchair). While the mob is trying to collect on his debt, Gardner's wife dies leaving the opportunity for the mob to collect their money out of the insurance proceeds. The whole thing snowballs; one small time collector or blackmailer after another is trying to collect on Gardner's upcoming windfall. Meanwhile, the son is probably the only 'normal' person. He is old enough to understand what is going on and is horrified at his father's behaviour.

Meanwhile, the black family who has moved in next door is blamed for everything that goes wrong; look how the neighbourhood has changed since they moved in.

Great and realistic period piece; music, furnishings, family roles.

Had an interesting plot that took a few moments to catch on what was really happening. The director could have done a better job in all aspects.

I had great hopes for another Coen Brother's classic, but this one doesn't work. I spent most of the film confused, trying to piece together the vague storylines. There's no flow to this story and it's missing one crucial element; an antagonist. You can better spend your time enjoying, A Serious Man, which is excellent. Sorry George Clooney, maybe next time?

The people of Suburbicon hail from all corners of this great nation. A melting pot of diversity from cities as far away as... New York!

We defy the supporters of Mr. Mayers to say our fears are groundless. We favor racial integration, but only at such time the negro shows he's ready for it. They don't seek to better themselves. This community has come too far to move backwards. We demand our civil rights to live where we want and with whom we want, and, with god's help, we will overcome!

You have to make decisions. Decisions like what's best for the family. Who's being helpful. Who's a liability.

Yes, it all boils down to one word, coincidence. That happens in the opera a lot.
===
The whole trouble with this integration business is that, in the end, it probably will end up with mixing socially. And you will have... Well, I think their aim is mixed marriages and becoming equal with the whites. But the only way they're gonna do that is by education and by bettering themselves, not by pushing in the way they have here.

Thank god it wasn't the Schvartzes that just moved in.
-Excuse me?
Isn't that what you Jews call 'em? Schvartzes?
-I'm an Episcopalian.
Really? I thought you were Jewish.
-Why?
Because of your last name.
-Lodge?
Sounded Jewish.
-I'm an Episcopalian.
