This cute little counting book features Molly Idle's Flora and some new birds, but otherwise has little else in common with the main features, appropriately keeping things simple because the target audience is much younger. Some full page flaps are used to surprise and help the young with their fine motor skills, but beyond this, it is a straightforward count from one to ten. Like her previous books, the composition is well thought out. New birds (aka numbers) are usually set apart from the others, and in cases where they aren't divided by space, they are distinguished in some other way. The numerals themselves are always offset, and printed in a contrasting blue, bold font, and do not include a written version. These methods of visual story telling should assist children learning to count. Fans of Flora may find this board book a bit disappointing, however as a counting book for the youngest children, it is a pretty decent choice.
