This is a story that can alter the way you think about things and give you a new outlook on the way you do things. An interesting story of a man that was raised on another planet and how he learns about Earth and teaches them about how they did things on Mars.

Before I read this book my life was Existential Angst in the Fiery Pits of Hell. Now I grok everything and I am at peace. Read it and start your grokking as soon as possible.

I liked this book a lot but lost interest in the end actually as it seemed to go off in an odd direction. up to that point it was very interesting.

This is supposed to be a sci-fi classic, but it's really just misogyny thinly disguised as 1960's hippie hedonism. Also, the superpowers of the man raised by aliens are unlikely (how could he aquire them if it's biologically impossible?). Maybe this novel is just a product of its time, but I mostly found what I read of it to be annoying, even infuriating.

The book I liked, an interesting take on a Human being raised by Martians.

The one line description here of this book is sorely lacking. Read the description on Amazon.com to get a better idea of what this book is about. :)

Good, but could be better. The first half is really strong, but the second kind of drags. I read the unedited version, and frankly, it needed editing.

I was only able to read until page 35, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt. Lots of sexualizing random things. I mean, there's a reporter whos talking to the only nurse who has seen the martian man, and yet this reporter finds it necessary to desperately ask if the nurse would like a "foot massage" in exchange for her spectacular quote. That's what we're supposed to take from what's happened in the book so far. I've heard enough Deviant Art horror stories to know where this book may be going. Also another messiah story specifically designed to disrespect religion without any serious commentary on modern or even previous religious practices from what I've heard. Not my cup of tea.

Decent read, but polyamory isn't for everyone. More power to those who do well with it.

"There was so much to grok, so little to grok from."
Classic sci-fi novel from the dean of American science fiction. With its story of a man from Mars preaching a new gospel, who can see why this big with the 60s counterculture. It's entertaining but very much of its time. I'd give it 3 groks up. Also see "Starship Troopers" and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress."

Sexual Content: Lots of it, but not describe in lewd detail. Sex is used to "become closer" with other people. It becomes kind of like the hippie "free love" view.

Violence: The "Man From Mars" makes threats just disappear. There is a very violent sequence at the end of the book of biblical proportion. I do not want to give it away though...

"...The Martians seem to know instinctively what we learned painfully from modern physics, that observer interacts with observed through the process of observation. 'Grok' means to understand so thoroughly that the observer becomes a part of the observed-- to merge, blend, intermarry, lose identity in group experience. It means almost everything that we mean by religion, philosophy, and science-- and it means as little to us as color means to a blind man."

A human born on Mars while his parents were on an expedition there is found by a crew later sent to Mars and brought home. The story examines the learning that the "Man From Mars" does through his life experiences and his desire to what the true "higher truth" is. He becomes fascinated at the fact that there are so many different religions on earth. Due to the fact that he cannot find the one that is correct, he, in essence, creates his own church.
