In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.

Yes, Johnny Depp does a fine job of playing the sociopathic whitey Bulger. No, Scott Cooper does a pretty pathetic job of organizing the series of events. Everything related to Bulger's psychopathic tendencies is done by hearsay and one never gets to know what it was that made him tick.

This dark, gripping film details the life and times of the notorious Irish-American gangster Whitey Bulger, played brilliantly by the enigmatic actor Johnny Depp. Bulger comes across as an absolute monster with only the slightest tinges of humanity left, and watching other characters deal with this demonic figure is quite a sight to behold. The real-life story has many disturbing implications given how surprisingly easy it was for Bulger's gang to manipulate both the FBI and local police agencies.

The film's other performances are pretty much top-notch across the board. At a technical level, the cinematography, sound, and other elements do a fine job in portraying the movie's gritty feel. While this certainly isn't for everyone, especially with the explicit language and graphic violence, fans of 'true crime' stories will love seeing the film.

Whitey Bolger and Robert Mueller were co-dependents in the Boston area. Mueller would tip him off of law enforcement raids aimed at Bolger. What did Mueller receive as his share? Let's investigate.

The violence is graphic as is the gutter language, but if you’re looking for another "Godfather" or "Goodfellas" you’re sure to be disappointed for Cooper is not so interested in cops & robbers thrills as he is in tracing one evil man’s descent into moral anarchy, and Johnny Depp proves to be the perfect vehicle. In the lead role an almost unrecognizable Depp slithers and hisses—his eyes as dead as his voice—a true sociopath who fouls everything he touches and whose paranoia and murderous rage increase exponentially with his bank account. Trading in his Aussie accent for a decent South Boston twang, Joel Edgerton’s FBI agent Connolly is a study in conflict torn between his oath to uphold the law and the blood ties he formed as a child. Rounding out the cast is Benedict Cumberbatch as Bulger’s younger brother whose position as a prominent Massachusetts senator adds a political twist and David Harbour as a fellow FBI agent who sees Bulger in a different light. Highly polished yet still maintaining a gritty aura of corruption throughout, Cooper films a blood-soaked strangulation as nonchalantly as he does a Miami Beach picnic while images of impotent Catholicism—an empty church ablaze with candlelight, a draped casket—underscore the very soullessness of his protagonist. Commendable performances from Kevin Bacon and Adam Scott on the good team and Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemons, and Rory Cochrane on the bad.

Wonderful movie, and Johnny Depp did a fine job. I have not liked him in several movies but this time he was great. Interesting to learn a bit about history and the Rico act was a new law that the feds were using against the mafia.

I did not even recognize Johnny Depp in this movie! He plays Whitey Bulger, the South Boston (Southie) gangster leader of the Winter Hill gang, who was on the FBI’s most wanted list for years. This film is about his relationship with an FBI undercover agent who recruited him as an informant. Whitey’s brother was a state (Mass.) politician and knew of Whitey’s activities. I recently borrowed The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese which is also about Whitey Bulger but has Leonardo DiCaprio playing an undercover cop with Southie connections who infiltrates Whitey’s mob. Watch both films if the subject interests you, you will still be left feeling was anyone not corrupt in South Boston at the time? Whitey was on the lam for a long time – did his criminal past finally catch up with him? Watch both films if you have the time.

You can go through the entire movie without being told (his brother Billy) Bulger is a democratic senator... I'm sure the same thing would happen if the senator was a Republican!
