How hard can it be to write a fantasy trilogy? When YA author Philip Murdstone's star starts to wane, his agent, the ruthless Minerva Cinch, convinces him that his only hope is to write a sword-and-sorcery blockbuster. Unfortunately, Philip is utterly unsuited to the task. In a dark hour, a dwarfish stranger comes to his rescue. But the deal he makes with Pocket Wellfair turns out to have Faustian consequences.

"The Murdstone Trilogy" is amusing throughout and parts of it are downright hilarious, particularly Peet's acidic multi-page description of how to write a fantasy novel. Unfortunately, this is the only adult novel Peet produced: he died shortly after this was published.

Contemporary Fantasy. Philip Murdstone's critically acclaimed young adult novels have just one flaw: they're not being read by young adults. The reason, according to his agent, is that Philip isn't giving readers what they want: fantasy, a genre he neither likes nor understands. Convinced that his career is over, Philip goes to the pub to drown his sorrows. After that, things get a bit hazy, but in his drunken state he either has a vision or actually strikes a Faustian bargain with the creature Pocket Wellfair, who dictates the first part of an epic fantasy saga, promising to reveal the rest in exchange for one little thing... This darkly humorous novel gleefully satirizes both the fantasy genre and the publishing industry. Fantasy newsletter November 2015
