A true story about Vinh Chung and his family, who fled Vietnam when he was three years old. The book recounts their harrowing experience as refugees, escaping on a boat, and ultimately settling in the US. They struggled and strove to build a new life in an unfamiliar country with a different culture and language. An engrossing story about survival and overcoming adversity.

I really enjoyed this book. I don't think it should be classified as an immigrant story or a Christian story. It is a first hand account of how a family struggles for survival and identity. The family members are well developed and real. It reads like a novel although it is a true story of a family without their homeland.

This is Vinh's true story of being one of the "Boat People" who escaped Vietnam and were rescued by a US boat, sponsored and housed in America. You understand why they had to leave Vietnam and how they were lucky enough to start again. They work very hard in their new country to make something of themselves.
