Classic gothic horror. Predates Dracula and is an important step in changing the image of the vampire from walking corpse to decaying and parasitic aristocrat. This edition has some helpful annotations from one of the best new horror writers and some stylish and highly detailed illustrations.

While vampires are my favorite ghouls for horror reading, I wasn't too impressed with this book. The prose is pure Victorian and the tendency to wax poetic means I sometimes have to start over to understand meaning. But, then again, it was written 26 years before Bram Stoker's classic and provides a foundation for the legend of Count Dracula, so it deserves some respect, hence three stars in my rating.

Beautifully creepy and delicious vampire tale... THE vampire tale... a must read for horror fans!
