As his family life threatens to disintegrate and his work partner disappears, he is assigned to the most shocking case of his career-a strange and remarkably violent murder. Stan must look into the crime alone. He finds just one witness, a neurologically disabled recluse who sees through the souls of others as demonic hallucinations. As more murders occur, and he drifts further from his family and friends, Stan's suspicion and rage escalate. Soon he realizes that the deaths fall into the pattern of a serial killer--and starts to believe that his witness is not at all insane, but terrifyingly perceptive . . .

'A Killer's Essence' is a gritty thriller that kept me enthralled from beginning to end. The character of Zachary Lynch is a good example of why mental illness or disability shouldn't be looked down upon. Sometimes there's more to a person's "disability" than what you think.

My only complaint is that we didn't get to see and hear more from Zachary, who actually plays a rather minor role in the book. His insights into people are interesting to read, and his interactions with the main character were intriguing, especially when you find out the thin thread connecting them.

The writing was well-paced and the detail was perfect, not too gory in the crime scenes, yet able to paint a vivid picture of what was going on. The details of each person also pointed to the fact that the main character is a cop who would categorize things the way that it's shown in the book.

This was an easy, fun read that kept you guessing with every twist and turn of the case. The romantic subplot is a bit forced, but it's barely there, so it's not so bad. I would suggest it for young adults and up if they want a little mystery and grit.

I really enjoyed this book and hope that the author plans more for this character.
