Through the warm-hearted, perceptive, and principled Commissario Guido Brunetti, Donna Leon has brought us Venice in all its aspects. Now Leon returns to one of her signature subjects: the environment, which has reached a crisis in Italy. In Venice, with the polluted waters of the canals, the issue is significant. For Brunetti, it becomes so when an investigator from the Carabiniere, looking into the illegal hauling of garbage, asks for a favor. (Bestseller).

Number 19 in the series many will know by now whether or not they like the adventures of Commissary Brunetti. For those unfamiliar with Donna Leon, this is a book about a detective and his case. though unlike many other detectives, he is not some lone wolf dealing with substance issue, miserable a d falling in love with women who will die, he is a Venetian man who has a wonderful relationship with his wife, and it is their relationship and thoughtful, witty exchanges that draw many readers back again to each novel. I was personally delighted to note that in discussion of corruption a number of ecological issues were noted (landfill waste, pollution) it will be interesting to see how many other novels this conversayion will seep into. Many have mentioned how the story is solved and that they find it absurd. I don't know... would it make more sense to a Venetian? I don't care a CSI type of investigation is not what I am looking for when I read the delightful and thought provoking Donna Leon.
