Although released in 2009, this film still delivers quite a punch. Sigourney Weaver as the mother and Ryan Kelley as Bobby, are convincing and authentic. Bobby's suicide is raw and tragic. His mother's quest to find meaning in her anguish and sorrow takes us through her well-intentioned, and unchallenged belief that God hates and condemns gays. She pushes away her beautiful son and Bobby is caught between love for his mother and belief that he is doomed.

If you have any thoughts about the sinfulness of being gay, this film challenges you to rethink your beliefs. Bobby's death leads his mother to search her soul then work to save and affirm the lives of LGBT youth. Her words are instructive: whatever you say as a parent, be careful because your kids are listening.

Although made-for-tv is stamped all over this, I found it an effective and affecting drama with an excellent cast. definitely worth watching, the extras contain some great information.
It never goes deeper than it's subject, but the story is gripping and while emotional only the "hell" dreams/visions seemed manipulative - or just plain didn't work.

Prayers For boby is about a guy who found that he is into guys and his parents dont accept him for what he is and the bible said if there two men in love they burn in hell. Its a sad movie its sad that he jumped off the bridge and kill himself.

Very sad story about a strict religious mother who finds out her son is gay. She tries to get him to "change", but only ends up making him feel lousy about himself until he commits suicide.

This is when the movie really starts as Mary starts to question her beliefs and tries to overcome her guilt. Weaver is fantastic and the story compelling. Well worth watching, and I intend to watch it again.

A Sad but True Story. Glad that there is more support now for Gay Teens and others.

Good - Prayers For Bobby (2009) [Made for Television - Lifetime] 120 min. A film that explores the life of Mary Griffith (portrayed passionately by Sigourney Weaver) provides all the myths, stereotypes and bigotry of homosexuality during the late 70s, early 80s - it's all so frustrating to see and hear the misinformation about homosexuality. The biggest myth is that God doesn't love a gay person?!? Which is a bunch of bunk. Another presented in this film is the theory of the time that homosexuality is a choice. What works really well in this film is how the attitudes are presented and how one in particular, Mary Griffith herself, matures to devalue all the myths and stereotypes of homosexuality. Well made television film hits home.
