Singer/guitarist/songwriter Mark Kozelek, who has recorded as Red House Painters, under his own name and, currently, as Sun Kil Moon (named after a Korean boxer), manages the tricky feat of being both boring and a d***. Last year, he released the acclaimed "Benji," but also insulted an audience and started a pointless feud with the War on Drugs, which lead to an offensively titled song. Sure there are plenty of jerks in rock, but Kozelek really stood out last year. I've always found his music a little boring, a little too sad bastard-y and I don't think he's ever written a song as good as "New Jersey," which dates back to his Red House Painter days. This is his fourth album as Sun Kil Moon, released in 2010, and is pleasant, but dull, with songs hitting the six and seven-minute mark, not because they need to, but because Kozelek seems to have drifted off, which the listener might too. It is the rare indie album that has a classical influence (in this case, guitarist Andres Segovia). Yawn.
