I liked the ambiance of 40s New York and the brief appearances of the gas gun wielding Sandman, but Matt Wagner was spinning his wheels a lot of the time. Madame Xanadu's back story in Spain, 1493 (ie during the Inquisition of Torquemada himself) was a bit heavy handed and and very obvious. They should have gone for more mood and atmosphere.
