An engaging and thrilling examination of what happened to the 115 Roanoke colonists who disappeared between 1587 and 1590. Taking an investigative approach, Lee reviews the historical context surrounding the disappearance in rich, vibrant detail using a plethora of primary sources. Especially potent is her research into the powerful ripple effects that cruelty by white colonists towards indigenous peoples had on later Roanoke settlers. Her theory is plausible, although much of it is built on questionable conclusions. Overall, an interesting source on late 16th century English life and colonialism, with some informative diversions into Elizabethan court life.
