Billy Pilgrim has become unstuck in time. An otherwise typical soldier in WWII, without warning, he jumps back and forth in his life with no control over where he is going next. Sometimes he is an ophthalmologist at home in suburbia; deep in World War II Europe, surviving the Allied bombing of Dresden; on the planet Tralfamadore, being held captive by aliens in an intergalactic zoo--accompanied by a porn star. In the end, he learns that the many tragic and sometimes funny ironies of life--the randomness of tragedy, the cruelty and senselessness of war, and man's complete lack of control over his fate--remain constant.

This, and Full Metal Jacket are the best war movies ever made IMHO.

This does well to exemplify the strength a movie adaptation of classic literature can have. This is a wonderful gem of a film that does not reveal too much too quickly, but rather allows the viewer to engage in the story themselves to understand the outrageous and non-linear progression. There were some understandable departures from the book for the sake of what is practical for a film narrative, but still stayed within the same spirit of the novel. Overall, I would recommend this film to any science fiction fans, students of medicine, or aspiring writers!

An excellent rendition of Kurt Vonnegut's classic novel. Most enjoyable!

A man travels thoughout time ( seemingly random )- based on the book by Kurt Vonnegut. This film was directed by George Roy Hill- one of my favorite classic Hollywood directors- though underrated for some reason- although he's made many fine films- including: The World According to Garp, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Slapshot and The Sting.

Valerie Perrine's naked breasts are perfect. The rest of this nutty movie was good too.

I haven't read this or any other Vonnegut - so this movie is my introduction.
a mythic odyssey, indeed. go through your life in a rather vacant manner, take your dog, live through the Dresden bombing, and make your ultimate escape to another planet.

this is the worst piece of crap ever put on a DVD. wish I would rate it a minus 44 instead of 1/2 star.

Agree completely with those who praise this movie: A wonderful adaptation. Glenn Gould's soundtrack contribution deserves special recognition. Since there was some discussion of Vonnegut's intentions such as come through in the movie, may I add my opinion that Billy's time-jumping and Tramfalmadorian experiences seem to be delusional?. . .although MV never explicitly says so. Examine the case of a weak-minded individual who suffers from several traumas and is subsequently kidnapped by aliens to be the consort of sex symbol Montana Wildhack--am I overinterpreting? (I must disagree with those who say that S-5 is necessarily MV's masterpiece, noting that 'Cat's Cradle' is often considered such.)

I wonder if comments regarding the "jumping around" are from persons who have not read the original book. That's how Vonnegut wrote it. Go read the book. Then rewatch the movie. You might understand this is exactly how Vonnegut meant this amazing piece to be absorbed. The whole premise is that Billy Pilgrim became "unstuck in time." This cannot be stated any more simply than that. The movie does an excellent job of depicting how a man "unstuck in time" lives his life.

In my tightly held personal opinion, Kurt Vonnegut Jr did not care at all if his books were to be translated into movies. He wrote for readers, not watchers.

One of the best novel-to-film translations ever; an absolutely brilliant film that would make George Roy Hill's reputation if he had directed nothing else--and it's his best achievement. Kurt Vonnegut himself was totally pleased with this adaptation, and said so; S-5 is accepted as Vonnegut's masterpiece, and is one of the great antiwar novels. Don't know what those are thinking of who rate this film at a low level; it is one of the best American movies of the 20th century. Compare Vonnegut's great tragicomic vision to other war films, and you'll appreciate that atrocity and hope and laughter can live in close proximity to each other. Two images are at the heart of S-5: The fire-bombing of Dresden, a jewel in the crown of European culture, and the Planet Tralfamadore, the Moses basket in which human aspiration will be conveyed to a better place and time. The casting is impeccable; Michael Sacks is perfect as Billy Pilgrim, and all actors produce memorable characters that accurately convey Vonnegut's intent. This film deserves and rewards multiple viewings, and is not to be missed.
