Through text and illustrations, describes more than twenty African symbol systems and alphabets used on the continent and in the Diaspora.
Through text and illustrations, Mafundikwa, founder of the Zimbabwe Institute of Visual Arts, describes African symbol systems and alphabets used on the continent and in the Diaspora. He shows through pictographs, rock art, mnemonic devices such as knotted cords, and systems such as those developed in Akan, Bantu, and Tifinagh that Africa has been literate for several thousand years. He examines historic African alphabets, including the Ethiopic and Nsibidi, alphabets of the Diaspora such as the Bassa Vah Script, and contemporary alphabets such as Somali and new West African writing systems. He also shows that, for example, those who read the Vai script of Liberia outnumbered the literate in certain parts of America and Britain in the nineteenth century. He includes an annotated bibliography and list of other resources such as museums and scholars. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
