[Review of the English Translation by Saunders and Seigle entitled, The Temple of the Dawn]

This is a very strange and yet intriguing novel from Mishima's The Sea of Fertility. It's philosophical and yet lively. It's humorous and yet also sensuous.

I didn't like how the philosophical lectures that Mishima gave through Honda, during the events of World War II, cut into the story. Those passages distract the reader from both the lively story captured in this instalment and the overall story arc that spans the four novels. I'm sure he could've provided these lectures in another way, more subtly and more potently as he did in The Temple of the Golden Pavilion.

Regardless, this is an interesting novel about Japan's painful postwar transformation.
