Discusses the geography, climate, agriculture, and natural resources of ancient Rome, and explains how the Romans used these resources to expand their influence. An important part of the curriculum requires that students gain an understanding of human and physical geography, and how geography, climate, and natural resources shape a society’s settlement and migration patterns, as well as its beliefs and daily activities. The city of Rome was built on land that was fertile and had access to the Mediterranean Sea. Over time this caused more people to come to Rome, and the civilization began to grow and flourish. In order to meet the needs of a growing population, it expanded to other lands.
