Originally released back in 1985 - "The Black Cauldron" is (IMO) certainly far from being one of Disney's best animated feature films, by a long-shot.

Completed on a hefty-sized budget of $44 million - "The Black Cauldron" only managed to make back $21 million at the box-office which put Disney Studios into serious financial jeopardy in the years to follow.

Personally speaking - I found this film's story to be unbelievably stale and equally uninspired. And, even though it contained some pretty decent visual effects, this did absolutely nothing to add any worthwhile interest to this film's duller-than-dishwater plot-line.

When Disney's animated feature film "The Black Cauldron" was originally released back in 1985, it was, indeed, a complete commercial failure. And, now, viewing it 34 years later, it's so easy to understand why it was such a big box-office floperoo back then.

Even though this would be the very first animated Disney production to actually incorporate CG imagery into its special effects, this in no way helped to boost its badly-conceived story any further beyond the level of total mediocrity.

All-in-all - "The Black Cauldron" is the sort of fantasy/adventure story that could only entertain very young children or adults with decidedly low expectations when it comes to worthwhile amusement.

Not a bad movie, really. The art style is good and the atmosphere really stands out. It's a shame this movie never found its audience. It also feels unfinished in places, and some scenes are either too short or too long, and others are missing entirely.

Awful. Warned, and not expecting it to match the book, I went in with lowered expectations and even then, was disappointed. The animation IS good, but story, dialog, and editing fall flat.

I wanted to watch this movie because I played the Apple PC game in the 1980s and I think I prefer the computer game. Old-fashioned animation, obnoxious characters (lewd witch!) and violent scenes made me think this was a movie from the 1960s. Was very surprised that it's from 1985. Definitely the creepiest and most boring Disney movie I've ever seen. Not recommended for little kids.

i love this movie i use to beg my mom to buy this movie in 2009 and evan in 2005 but i never got it but later i found out that st.paul had the glad classic collection of this dvd but now they don't but i did get to watch the gold classc collection of this movie so that was a good thing but than the new one came out i asked if you can get it you did get for your own collection same thing i barrowed it and i loved it i also watch this movie at school in 2009 with my whole class my teacher said ooh scarry i think it is kind of a scarry disney movie for litttle kids it scared me a few times this disney movie but still a good movie maybe it's not populor but i still liked it .

Great book. Mediocre movie.

I remember reading a comic version of the movie when it came out in the 80s. I remembered vaguely it wasn't well received, but thought I'd check it out. By chance, I came across the book at a garage sale last year and it was really enjoyable. It was obviously the second (or even third) book in a series. So when I watched the movie, I was very disappointed. Without reading any other books in the series, I have to guess that the screenplay took part of the plot of the first book(s), and replaced the Black Cauldron plot line with whatever the plot of the first book actually was. It did not end well. The book definitely deserved a better adaptation than this. I do look forward to reading the rest of the books, though, as they look really good.

as usual, the animation is great but the story has a bit of an unfinished feel to it. It does make me want to read the books.
maybe not for the littlest ones

Frightening or Intense Scenes: There definitely are in this movie. The Horned King and his skeleton army is quite gross. I think this would at least make a good Halloween movie😒.
