The comment by <uncommonreader> misrepresents the book in that most all of the artists are well-known. All of the artists in the first few chapters would be included in any Art History 101 course -- Caravaggio, Goya, Degas, Whistler, Van Gogh, Matisse. The later chapters include modern and contemporary giants like Pollock, Rothko, Warhol, Diebenkorn, Motherwell, Schnabel, Hockney, and Kiefer.

This is a collection of short (two to three page) reviews of art exhibitions, which mostly appeared in Time magazine in the 1980s. It is amazing how many of these artists are unknown to-day and in that sense, the book is very dated. However, the introduction, on the bankruptcy of modern/post-modern art, is still relevant 20 plus years later.
