Many, perhaps most films have scripts that could use another draft or two, or five, and The Ref is no exception -- unless you find recurring jokes about cat pee hi-larious. But also like many films, The Ref relies on star power: Judy Davis, Kevin Spacey, Christine Baranski, Glynis Johns, Dennis Leary and a crowd of supporting players, all better than their material. Also, better than their direction. For example, there is a lengthy opening credits sequence, which explores the Connecticut small-town setting, and the joys of the holiday. If you think the exposition is going to pay off later, no it doesn't, not at all. But against the odds, The Ref is worth seeing, if only because the actors band together and make it funny. That is the true Christmas miracle.

Agree that it's a solid holiday season film. What's REALLY funny is that for some reason the film was released in the middle of summer, like July or something, when it came out. Never heard the story about why a movie about Xmas was in the theatres in July, but there you have it...

YES! This is funny, my kind of humor. Such effective couples therapy: tie them together for a few hours. Sort of "Jingle Bell Rock" movie version; something not "white Christmas", yet with a message worth watching once a year: it's a season where one feels good, even though it isn't even suppose to be about me, me, me.

SAD TO SAY THIS WAS ONE OF KEVIN SPACEY'S WORST MOVIES. DID NOT ENJOY A CHRISTMAS WITH SUCH A DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY. WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SEEN MORE OF THE LADY WHO OWNED THE BOAT. NEVER SEEN SUCH A BUNCH OF DUMB SHERIFFS OR POLICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hilarious satire on a modern American family who are held hostage in their own home. Great acting, not to be missed...

Comments here are a good example of how there's always someone who doesn't like something (troll?) This is so funny -- highlight is Denis Leary banging the telephone on the counter.

Along with «Scrooged», this is one of my favorite Christmas flicks. A very funny portrayal of a dysfunctional family on Christmas Eve, without resorting to slapstick.

One of Christine Baranski's best roles. "Slipper socks. Medium" LOL
