"Say You're One of Them" is one of those important books that opens you to more of the human experience. To read news stories of Africa is one thing, to read these short stories from Uwem Akpan is an education for the heart and mind.

If you are looking for a book that will restore your faith in humanity and your hope for a brighter future for mankind, this is not the book you are looking for. The stories in this collection show kids in horrible situations, victims of…

It pains me to read these short stories which are told through the lens of a child. Prostitution, Child Sex Trafficking, religious conflict and more run rampant through various African nations. The language of the book was hard to get…

great book with a unique and innocent perspective. told from the point of view of the children, an effect which makes their innocence even more pronounced. Definitely recommend

I'm not one to keep up with foreign affairs, but usually when attention is drawn in the news about such things as child slavery, genocide and abuse to children in Africa it catches my attention and I just say a prayer and remind my…

Five stories (two quite long at about 150 pages each) set in Africa. Child narrators. Harrowing and horrific and unbearably hard to read. The only aspect which did not work well for me was the use of dialogue which was used to show…

Great collection of wide ranging short stories, but due to subject(s) covered, difficult to read at times.

i could not finish reading this book it was too painful & to think these stories were happening to small children it just tore my heart apart. what puzzles me even more is that a catholic priest wrote these stories.

Though the subject of the short stories are a powerful subject, I found the writer's style was really hard to follow. Also, many of the stories seem to drop off without really ending.

These stories are not easy to read, nor sentimental, but real. While heartbreaking, these stories need to be told.

I felt as though I should probably enjoy this book more than I did...the stories are well-written, and they certainly do put a sympathetic voice to a world that we don't normally hear about. I just can't say that I loved it, nor can I…

These are stories for mature readers. They are not happy stories, but they give insight into the struggles facing poverty-stricken children in Africa. It is disturbing to realize what depths hunger and despair take one to. A number of…

A few of the short stories are good, but some are hard to follow. One of them I didn't finish. Having said that, the stories provide great insight into a world that is so different from Canada. The struggles and sacrifices depicted in…

Wonderful book of heartbreaking stories. Gives a glimpse into the lives of a world so different from North America. Not for children, but a great read for adults about children and the sacrifices they and their parents make to survive.
